Candidates Stand Their Ground on Super Tuesday

People are unhappy. They've been unhappy for a while - through Enron and the dotcom bubble bursting, 9/11, two wars, Katrina. They thought Barack Obama would bring change but few have felt the changes he's wrought: Who can imagine how bad the economy could have gotten sans stimulus? It feels bad enough as it is. Then came the Gulf oil spill. If 2008 was a change election, 2010 promised to be even more so. Incumbents are even more unpopular than they were in 1994, the Washington Post told us. Voters favor newcomers 60% to 32%, Gallup reported. Indeed, voters took out their anger at the polls, electing
virtually any yokel who promised change or who railed at the Washington establishment, and sending home four congressional incumbents. The narrative thus far? Throw the bums out.

That is until Super Primary Tuesday. Somewhere along the way, voters on both sides of the aisle re-found their pragmatism. They remembered that viability, not just purity, was also important. In Arkansas, pundits were predicting the demise of two-term conservative Democrat Blanche Lincoln in a run off but voters proved them wrong and Lincoln wrangled a surprise comeback. In Iowa, Republicans bucked the Tea Party trend and gave former four-term governor Terry Branstad another shot at his old job. Likewise, in Virginia's Fifth Congressional District, six Tea Party candidates went home disappointed last night as the establishment Republican, State Senator Robert Hurt, ran away with the nomination beating his closest opponent by more than 20 points.

In fact, a surprising number of establishment candidates survived challenges in a season where Washington's blessing of felt more like a curse. . . ..

If I was a Democrat I wouldn't be too excited about the Lincoln win. My take that that she will be easier to beat in the general election than Bill Halter would.

Many Democrats are upset with Lincoln and will not support her while they might have moved back to Halter.

Second that.
She'll lose in November.

As for Republicans ... they'll regret Sharron Angle.
Giving her the nomination will make it a lot more easy for Reid to survive another six years.

You are probably right. But after Sue Lowden stepped in it with that chickens for medical care thing, I don't think they had a strong candidate.

Here's hoping that Angle gets a lot of support with endorsements and $. I have mixed emotions about her but I really would like to see Reid defeated.

Quote:
After the Nevada primary, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is still fighting an uphill battle. Democratic strategists are now seeing new signs of life in Reid's campaign based on the Nevada primary GOP selection of Tea Party candidate Sharon Angle. The thought process is that Angle will blow up during the next five months by stumbling rhetorically and that her past statements will give the Democrats ammunition to paint her as extremist to independent voters.

But many pundits
forget that in Nevada, there is a 14 percent unemployment rate--a tough environment for any incumbent. On top of that Reid, a four term senator, has a 41 percent approval rating. Winning is going to be tough to pull off. So instead of highlighting a campaign of solutions to create jobs and better income for Nevadans, Reid’s campaign is going to employ a scorched earth strategy? It seems the Democrats would rather have it be a choice rather than a referendum on Reid’s leadership.

Not to sound cold, but Nevadans will be the one's to regret. If high unemployment and elitist mentality is to their taste then Mr.Reid shall give them a feast!
